"Jesus" didn't "cover your ass" if he died over your sins, rather than for them.  You need to decide what parts of magic book and your christian religion you want to be true, at some point.

"Sin" is such a silly word. Jesus died because of the parabasis(motion against a fixed point or standard also translated as "sin", transgress) of Adam which made all mankind paraptOma(to cross a line viewed from it's effect(also translated "sin", trespass): hamartia or, amiss. Since that time, "death reigned from Adam till Moses" when the Levitical offerings put the things of death aside until the final offering of Jesus which paid our ransom and freed us from our captor death(not physical death) that we might have life(not physical life) in His fame. A past action no one can add to or, take away: making "salvation" moot. "I set before you life and death.' "Choose life that you may live.'" Well, that's what the "magic book" says in it's original language all useless man made theologies aside.
