Here I suggest that we relate to another thing that we understand: our human nature.
Being mere "humans" with "flaws" and "weaknesses" will make us understand and realize that we need "God"; ego and child-dreams of nations before us about becoming "Gods" would evaporate, and instead of ego we will embrace humility.
Yes there is a God above us that tortures anybody who crosses the lines he drew; instead of having "child-dreams" or let me say "Satanic dreams" about becoming Gods ourselves, let's admit that we know nothing about God but what he revealed about himself, he is the eternal refugee, he is what keeping life and the universe alive, his mercy covers all and his punishment is subject to his justice.
If we can't relate to him, how can we connect with him, and care about him? We can relate to other people, and support them, and thus they can support us. We need them in that sense. This god that we can't communicate with directly, and connect with and empathize with, is not something we need. Especially if he's as evil as you're making him out to be. He tortures people who don't do exactly what he wants, and what he wants can't be achieved, so we're just left with begging him not to hurt us.
He has not revealed anything, since we're still bickering about who he is, and what he does thousands of years after he supposedly started telling people to write about him.
We can relate to ourselves though; knowing what hurts us and what is good for us. I'm not making him "evil" since I said explicitly that he is merciful; but if you translate "justice" to "evil" then that is your damaged vocabulary.
He did reveal, and billions believed in his revelation; blaming the war that is burning between "believers" and "non-believers" on the first party is not fair; especially when we compare the body-count each party dropped -with your party winning the contest with the invention of atomic weapons and causing two mass extinctions on two whole continents -the Americas-.
