At the time I'd hypothesized that they give all their love to Jesus and have none leftover for anyone else.My Christian father would state that "those who hide behind the cloth, often are the most unclean." Quite telling, in that case.
I've known some scumbag atheists. And I know some wonderful liberal Christians. Then again, the Christians I like are educated and often harp on the hypocrisy and anti-community themes espoused by common preachers. My father, in particular, despises organized religion and it's blight on theology, changing an area of interesting philosophy into soapboxes for Uncritical Thinker's Brigade, complete with money changers et al.
What you, DP, have noticed, is that the decent are always in short supply compared to the wicked.
It just happens that most of our country is Christian. And that most of our country has rather egregious scumbags. The two are often paired, with little true dependence on each other, but with a lot of unexpected synergy.
