From my understanding the cops opened fire on the peaceful protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets, perhaps precipitating the riots.
Just to be clear, as far as I'm concerned, there is no excuse for rioting or looting and those involved deserve to have the book thrown at them, preferably wrapped around a brick.
There has to be something lacking in the way cops are educated and trained these days that they are unaware of the fact that their every action on the street is very likely to be recorded on one of the millions of cameras people carry with them.
They read too may Joseph Wambaugh novels. You can't get away with that shit anymore.
