Got some space in the north. Lots of it. And a whole continent down south. Australia is pretty empty of people across most of it. And then there's always underground and on the ocean floor/surface of the ocean. I'm not following you on the space running out just yet. And since we're so busy running out of water: why not make more? Or find more. It's harder getting down here, sure... but tell me it's not there. A lot of Australia is either desert or at most semi-desert, if you were to over-impose a map of Australia over the Sahara desert, that would show you how much habitable land there is in Australia.
Given the high rainfall variability in Australia, you could consider that whole area colored with grassland and desert as arid, with most of the remainder being semi-arid.
