My dad, his best buddy, and me. We got caught up in a quick moving thunderstorm five miles offshore in the gulf. 20ft carolina skiff, 45hp outboard. Pretty early on in our run for shore, the cable steering seized somewhere between the center console and the rear assembly. My dad started beating the cables, yelling about not being able to break something if it's already broken, while his buddy detached the cables and set it for tiller. I was bailing - we'd plowed into a few nasty waves. Eventually, we got the immediate situation under control and made a bone crunching slow trip back to the lifts.
There was so much confusion at shore that they never got around to checking our well, and even if they had, we'd been cleaning and storing fish in every space that could be stuffed with ice. I've never been more certain that I was about to die, or more wrong, and sitting here today it's hard to recall anything ever being quite as much fun.
