I keep them in a safe or holster.
I have only two guns. Three if you count my BB gun so it would be ridiculous for me to get a whole safe for my two guns.
Here in Michigan if your gun gets stolen and used in a crime - you can be held criminally and civially liable.
The only exception is if it was in a locked gun safe.

If someone steals your gun - it will take all of 3 minutes to destroy and remove the trigger lock.
