He was not afraid of the police. If you're afraid, you don't do something that's going to make it way more likely that you get shot. He was clearly suicidal. If he didn't think his life mattered, I don't see why anyone else should. Justified killing.
Doesn't matter. If you feel you have nothing to lose, and you think police are going to kill you anyway you won't be thinking straight.
