Demons (or Tanar'ri) are chaotic evil aligned servitors who reign in the infinite layers of the Abyss. They are currently embroiled in the "blood war" against the Devils in the nine planes of Baator (or Hell). They are ruled by different demon princes like Demogorgon, Yeenogou, Graz'zt, Ocrus and others.
It says so in the sacred scriptures, edition 3.5. Personally, I've never gotten into 4th edition.
