As with Christmas and the winter solstice, it appears the TRUE meaning of thanksgiving has got nowt todo with Native Americans (nor Christianity, for that matter). According to wiki they celebrate it in Japan and Germany even

Yeah, lots of places have a harvest festival of some sort or other, a holdover from an era when a good enough harvest to keep fewer people from starving to death was thanks worthy.
