Tanks don't need to scare you, just kill you. When you are turned into red fog by a .50 it makes no difference what the machine that sprays you looks like. It does make a difference for the people who are supposed to maneuver in them. A hexapod or octopod make much more sense than a biped system as it is inherently unstable because of the high center of gravity.
I've been designing and building robots for over a decade, and I've seen enough methods of motion on various platforms to see what works and what not.
