You could almost hear him roll his eyes every time a kid gave him a button. He wore a vest covered in them and had a wall that was also covered in buttons. His show used to be the Rusty Nails show which is the clown that inspired Matt Groening to create Krusty the Klown.
That must be a trait for local kid show hosts. We had a show out of Cedar Rapids that was called Dr. Max and Mombo. It was a pretty long show that included little skits, cartoons, The Little Rascals, The Three Stooges...all sorts of things. Mombo was the clown. Dr. Max was said to detest children. He was known to go to different hospitals around Iowa to dry out from time to time...a fact attested to by my aunt who was a nurse at one of hospitals where he took his little vacations.
