Douglas Bader (referenced in the Funny Memes thread) joined the RAF at the age of 18 in 1928 and was commissioned two years later. Just a year later, he lost both legs after crashing his plane while performing low-altitude acrobatics. After recovering, he was fitted with artificial legs which enabled his to drive, fly a plane, and play golf. He successfully repeated his pilot training and passed all his checks and tests, but was cashiered as an invalid anyway.
When WWII broke out, the RAF accepted him as a pilot. He flew for just one year (1940-1941) before being captured after bailing out over occupied France. In that one year, Bader was credited 22 victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable, and eleven enemy aircraft damaged.
Legless badass.
