That fallacy is the result of atheists playing games with the etymology of the word. They want to pretend that atheism is the product of "a" (without) + theism (a "belief in a god) = without a "belief" in any gods.
That is horseshit.
It cannot have derived that way, because the word "atheism" came into the English language 100 years BEFORE the word "theism."
Yeah...today atheists insist that anyone who is not a theist has to be one of them...an atheist.
I do not blame them. The agnostics are a shitload smarter and more logical. The can inflate their numbers...and get smarter more logical people by playing that game.
I say screw you people.
I am not an atheist.
Albert Einstein said that he did not "believe" that any gods exist...BUT THAT HE WAS NOT AN ATHEIST.
Neil deGrasse Tyson says that he does not "believe" that any gods exist...BUT THAT HE IS NOT AN ATHEIST.
Carl Sagan said that he did not "believe" that any gods exist...BUT THAT HE WAS NOT AN ATHEIST.
Same story for Stephen Hawking...although just after his death, there were some atheists who attempted to revise history .
All four described themselves as agnostics...and raged against anyone who claimed they were atheists.
I am no Einstein, Tyson, Sagan, or Hawking...BUT I AM ALSO NOT AN ATHEIST.
No matter how much you crave me.
I don’t believe there are no gods. I am an atheist.
The ball is in your court and you’re dropping it.

In what way is it not a binary choice? What is a third alternative?
To not be either.
