I'm not sure how well John Lithgow's performance as Roberta Muldoon is viewed among transfolk today (probably with a similar annoyance that many on the autism spectrum see Raymond Babbit), although, that said, I doubt that Warner was all that ready for a truly nuanced transgender supporting character in 1982, let alone casting a trans actress.
