Ah, but you see, that's the problem. If the Bible is the ultimate word of god, who gets the authority to go and interpret it? If the Bible is true at all, then either all of it is, or then nothing.
Though, I prefer gentle believers, who take the good parts and live according to them, than those who take everything seriously and e.g. beat their kids to a pulp when they "sin". Hell, even I think that the golden rule is one of the best philosophies in the world to live by.
