That's not what I mean. I mean the symbolic eating of bread and drinking of wine, to remember Jesus' sacrifice, in a physical way. It's a nice little spiritual token, for those who can tolerate going to church.
Billions of Catholics believe they are actually EATING JESUS. "Body, blood, soul and divinity". It's not "symbolic" for them.
The problem isn't really "Who was Jesus" (if there even was one) ... one of the big problems that isn't discussed much, is that the things that are said about what he preached about are the concerns of late 1st Century Judaism, not early 1st Century, so what we have is coming from the wrong end of that, ... but the problems are also in what is *said* (in the gospels) that people "believed about him" ... as that is what the gospels are, ... statements or proclamations of belief, and they're all over the place, even the 4, to say nothing about the other hundreds of gospels.
Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble. - Joseph Campbell
