After reading a couple of articles, not delving too deeply, the pushback on GoF funding sounds like the money was never intended to be applied to such research, but rather related research into infectious diseases among humans. The money, however, may have found its way into Chinese labs for that purpose unintentionally. Lots of scientific definitions and gray areas. It doesn't look like anything overt happened but rather what usually happens in a complex world. People will do what they want when no one is looking.
My two takeaways:
1 - Why is the US putting any money into any Chinese research agency? I could understand partnering with information or technology, but this involved actually contracting work to a Chinese lab. Sounds like a bad idea.
2 - I'm completely sick of congressional kangaroo courts. These things are political football games. It's clear the facts and data aren't what's being investigated. Paul was looking to put Fauci on a stake and burn him, plain and simple.

Why is it so?
