I have been using Eset anti virus software for years and never had a problem. You can "set and forget" and it will work well, or dive into the settings and tweak it to your requirements.
Without looking it up I can't remember the cost, but a two year licence is around £2 a week I think. (I spend far more than that on coffee/)
