This reminds me of a story someone told. There is a very steep hill --5 or so miles-- near where I live, and at the bottom of the hill is a cliff... a wall of pure rock. (I'm in the Appalachians.) Truckers can lose their breaks on that hill and crash into the wall. There are dozens of crosses at the bottom of the hill. Tons of accidents have occurred there.
Anyway, someone was recounting an incident where a trucker crashed into the wall and survived... and they added "Someone must have been watching over him."
Like... they weren't totally watching over him. After all, he crashed into a wall and sustained serious injury. It's an exercise in selective bias to say that since it could have been worse that some force intervened and prevented it from being worse. It also could have been better. No one says, "Wow. God really dropped the ball there because that guy's truck is fucked."
