On second thought, I'm a baby boomer so grew up in the 1950's and 60's. The Holocaust was never mentioned. I found out about it by seeing a clip about the Liberation of some of the camps on TV when I was 16. I vomited.
So I guess to be fair, I need to realise a lot of younger and middle aged people know nothing about the Holocaust. Should it be taught to age appropriate children? (say 14 and above) If not why not and if so, why?
In Illinois, we've had laws mandating Holocaust Education since 1989, and 15 other states have enacted similar laws. 9 of them came to pass in the last 4 years, and Kansas is still one of the 34 states that hasn't bothered to pass such a law.
You mentioned that the Holocaust wasn't mentioned much in the first two decades after the war, and, frankly, it makes sense. It's one of the grisliest chapters of human history. When Orson Welles made The Stranger in 1946, he actually showed footage of the liberation of the camps. In the context of the film, the commandant of one of the camps was on the run, and ended up getting engaged to a girl in small-town America. The Nazi hunters looking for him had to show his fiancee footage of the camps to show her the gravity of the situation. Her response probably summed up the reaction to most Americans, even many Jewish people: "why do you want me to look at these horrors?" If it's mentioned in WW2 movies, it's usually in oblique references to people being turned into soap.
But that changed near the end of the Fifties and I think it was largely due to George Lincoln Rockwell starting the American Nazi Party and codifying the stock answer to people worried that embracing their bullshit will lead to mass exterminations by denying that the Holocaust ever happened. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. So, they had to get people to learn from history. And then, the Holocaust became a much more prominent event.
