Today I learned about an alternative to cremation called ‘aquamation’ (technically ‘alkaline hydrolysis’), in which the body is placed in an airtight chamber which is then filled with an alkaline solution. The chamber is then heated and the solution dissolves the soft tissues. The resulting mess is then dried and the bones and teeth pulverized.
The process uses 90% less energy than traditional cremation and emits no greenhouse gases.
