Dexter is not a "hero", he's an anti-hero. Some people only enjoy watching fictional characters that are innocent and wholesome; Superman if you will. I know some people like that. Others enjoy that as well as flawed characters who are morally ambiguous. These characters are probably the most popular nowdays. If you don't enjoy such characters, then you won't be able to enjoy a lot of material because this sort of character is all over the place. If anything, I believe morally ambiguous characters do a much better job of making them relatable because few real humans are innocent beyond reproach. Most of us have our nasty side and don't relate that well to characters that are super duper goodies.
