This was common practice in Catholic schools in the 1950's and 1960's, Don't know if it's still the case.
I highly doubt it is the case nowadays in Catholic schools. My experience with the catholic school system is that these days it is little different from the state school system and/or the 'grammar' schools. Only the fundamentalist protestant schools are really different from the rest of the education system to any extent.
