I should also mention that while russia’s nuclear arsenal is impressive, china’s ability to build a larger one is without a doubt. At the moment the our capacity to produce key military material is dwarves by those of china. in some areas chinese industrial capacity that can be applied to building military hardware exceeds that of the rest of the world combined. If we try to put chinese nuclear deterrence in similar state of dubious credibility as we attempt to do to Russia, I have zero doubt that china will react violently as well, and will in addition vastly accelerate the expansion of her nuclear arsenal in an effort to overwhelm with mass what advantageous positions might gain the US. I would not be surprised by the end of this decade, the amount of nuclear weapons pointed at the US will reach several times the ~5000 that is in russian and chinese silos now.
