I don't think it does. We could act as if we were conscious without being conscious. Consciousness itself doesn't seem to add anything useful.
Hence why I think it's a by-product.

Consciousness itself, of any form, runs a lot deeper. Alongside evolution rather than subsequent to it, IMO.
Are you saying that the invention/discovery of fire was an unconscious act? And, after Homo erectus discovered fire 2 Mya, what did such do for evolution of bigger Homo brains?
