As for profit, the pharmaceutical companies actually made far less by selling vaccines to government than they would have if they sold it retail.
TL;DR: Turns out that a big portion of why vaccine trials take so long is because a lot of it involves waiting on funding the fucking things.
We could probably develop vaccines for a shitton of other diseases as quickly as we did COVID, but, of course, that requires funding, and that's where the limitations of capitalism come into play. The fact that those other diseases aren't currently ravaging the world like the angel of death spreading his wings on the blast and blowing in the face of Sennacherib is also a major reason. Why, yes, that does suck.
