He's a man profoundly uncomfortable with his faith and riddled by self doubt in the light of his understanding of it. He feels the tug of belief - but is he transfigured? Well, no, and he knows it. In that light, what right does he have to say he truly believes in god or is truly a christian, because magic book tells him that if he did and he were he'd be moving mountains - and yet no mountain moves.(July 20, 2022 at 6:14 pm)The Grand Nudger Wrote: Jordan Peterson has never once contradicted his repeatedly self identified christianity. He says things about his christianity that other christians don't believe and more than just few would call heretical..but they all do that.
Actually, here's one case where he did:
Quote:Are you a Christian? Do you believe in God?
I think the proper response to that is No, but I’m afraid He might exist.
Of course, I'm inclined to think that what Jordan personally believes about God isn't necessarily relevant, especially since he seems more interested in religion as a tool to create a functional society. I suspect that if you got Jesse Custer from Preacher to talk to him and use The Word to explain what he really thinks, it'd be something similar to this:
Granted, you'd have to replace heathenism with Christianity, maybe whatever religion was traditionally popular in a given area, but I doubt that when he talks about promoting Christianity, it's from the point of view of someone who feels they were washed in the blood of the lamb and wants as many people as possible to be so.
So that's a super literal and traditional idea swirling around his head - but he does balance that with more liberal and modern interpretations. For example, he points to the notion that even god, when he was a made a man, lost faith. That all of this that we have to deal with on earth is so terrible that it was enough to cause god to doubt himself on the cross - so what chance do we lowly mortals have? Now that..is a heady mix of literalism and allegorical revision - but all of it distinctly and explicitly christian. He's a christian who doesn't want to get bogged down by (or slimed with) those bits of christiana he doesn't believe in while asserting those bits he does. -Especially- when he happens to hold some political view shared by dirtball christians which he would like to argue for without it being pinged and dismissed as coming from dirtball christianity rather than being some profound philosophic point that he makes and everyone else misses. IOW, a bog standard christian.
I'd be surprised to find that he was a creationist, or an inerrantist or a literalist, and he's certainly no backwoods bible thumper...but fucks sake, we can give the man his christianity, which he never shuts up about...can't we?
