He deserved to lose when he did, but for most of his tenure he was just a smart conservative policy wonk who had no personality. At the end, the Conservatives were doing a right-turn in line with American politics - one they have doubled down on now that a mostly-inoffensive Erin O'Toole didn't deliver a win.
Pierre P. is a dangerous populist. I wouldn't vote for him, ever. At least I gave Erin a second look.
Him being dangerous, in Canadian terms, is why we like him, though. It's a feature, not a bug. Justin Trudeau, a couple months ago, said it's time to make Holocaust denial illegal in Canada. Now, I personally have no interest in denying any Holocausts myself, but this is what I see as dangerous. Limiting speech more and more. Bringing in a one year in jail penalty for indigenous people that protest in the wrong area. Trudeau really loves the Indians though. He cares about them so much, he dresses up as them in blackface for Halloween. Wait... that's the other kind of Indians.
Comedy is illegal in Canada. We're trying to be some utopia of niceness, and it's just gross. I don't know about you, but comedy being disallowed in a country kind of sounds dangerous to me. At some point, people have to push back against things like this. If Americans only knew how insane our little utopia up here is.
Ottawa Convoy Mediator calls government's use of the Emergencies Act an overreaction.
And Canada is about to destroy Canadian youtube with their censorship. J. J. McCullough is fantastic and far from a right winger for anyone who doesn't know of him. And our American friends will get a kick out of him as he's the type of Canadian who actually does pronounce it "aboot" like the stereotype goes.
I think Canada will be just fine socially with Pierre in office. I wouldn't vote for a Republican in the States. They've got a whole shit storm going on there right now with abortion and gay issues and all of that. I don't think any of that will be a real issue in Canada with the Conservatives back in charge, and our universal healthcare isn't going anywhere, but then again, I never thought Roe would go away in the US, so I will admit that I was very wrong there, and I definitely underestimated how bad a Conservative Supreme Court would be. And yes, it saddens me that I will have to vote for someone like Pierre who doesn't have the same concerns that I do about climate change and the impact it's going to have, but the world seems to be fucked anyways when it comes to climate, so I guess we just need to prepare to open up our hearts and take in massive amounts of climate refugees. It is fair to use the word dangerous when it comes to Pierre's position on climate policy, and he's not going to be as good as the other two parties when it comes to making the rich pay their fair share or helping poor people, but the safety net will stay in place regardless. It just won't grow as much as it would under the other parties. All of these things are fair criticisms.
