russia being in the EU is a mortal threat to the global influence of the US. the US has a lot more lever to pull to make such integration to painful to consider for the EU.

in the long run, russia’s weight in the EU would also come at the expense of the influence of eastern european states. so they will bitterly oppose it under any pretext.
