It is just politics and the voyeur aspect of human nature.
I think what's important in elections is how this plays out in the minds of undecided voters. They're the ones who actually decide elections. I remember reading an article a while back saying that like 40% of the population already knows they're voting for the democrat in the next election and another 40% knows they're voting for the republican. The remaining 20% are the ones that decide elections. The question is, how is this going to grab their attention?
The only thing I see about the Hunter Biden laptop story that's sensational enough to hold undecided voters attention for the next two years are the dick pics and I honestly don't think those are going to influence how someone votes.
If this had come out earlier, say in October or something, sure, it might have had an impact because it was right before an election, but the American electorate has a very short memory (if they didn't, democrats would have a super-majority in the house and senate as a response to January 6).
People like to think their cynicism has been confirmed. People love a train wreck. Recency bias for the win.
