I've often felt that all democracies (not just the embarrassment that the one in the US has become) should have a basic test for voters. You walk into your voting booth and are presented with three basic civics questions of the level taught in high schools. Answer the questions correctly and the voting machine unlocks and you cast your ballot. Get even one wrong, and a klaxon sounds, a red light flashes, and you slink out of the polling place having just demonstrated that you are too woefully ignorant to have a voice in running the state.
