If you agree with Gwaithmir's statements here, you would have to say that Isaac Newton and Georges Lemaître, among many others, were unintelligent.
I would say they were ignorant of many things that have bearing on the question of the existence of a deity.
Aristotle was brilliant, but usually wrong. newton was a genius, but also wrong in detail. Lemaitre was hugely important for the rise of chemistry, but certainly did not know even about atoms.
It is quite possible for an incredibly intelligent person to also be ignorant.
As such, the conclusions made when the state of knowledge was lower cannot limit us now.
