Threats rarely have a positive effect. The child will either conform to the parents wishes out of fear that his life will be made miserable (and resent his parents for not accepting his choices) or rebel and end up getting into serious trouble.
Although, I could very well do away with celebrating Christmas, I do it for my children. They understand my views and instead of "forcing" them to do without Christmas, I let them experience what other children get to - no matter what they believe or not believe in.
