I'm just wondering if any of you are familiar with the writings of Lee Strobel? I've been coming up against his works more and more when arguing against christianity. Apparently, he used to be an atheist, but found proof of God, and now is a born again christian. Based on what I've already read on him, I call total bull shit, but his supposed "scientific findings" seem to be swaying a lot of people. I was just curious if any of you had an opinion on him or were familiar with his work.
I often quoted apologists like Lee Strobel in my own book. Usually the subheading that introduced the quotation was along the lines of "Lee Strobel Tries to Explain".
Needless to say, the "explanations" often rivel Maxwell Smart as he prefaced his statements with "would you believe...?" When I read "The Case for Christ" and "The Case for Faith", I found them so underwhelming that they really shouldn't need a response at all.
In general, this is Strobel's approach:
Step 1: Play up the "hard nosed investigative reporting" schtick (as much an act as the "I'm an ex-atheist, no really" schtick).
Step 2: Present some total nerfball objections to Christianity that allegedly come from unnamed "skeptics". Play up these nerfball questions as if they're so deeply troubling to matters of faith.
Step 3: Interview some lauded Christian apologist who knocks down the strawman skeptic objection.
Step 4: Avoid interviewing any skeptic for rebuttal or for a real objection that would be hard for the apologist to answer.
Repeat as necessary.
Quote:I presume he was as bad a reporter as he is an apologist
On what basis would we evaluate the quality of an apologist, considering they all use the same canned rehashed arguments?
