The obedience is for getting rewards only, but the more one is obedient for God the more they realize that this life is a mere timed simulation that will end very soon. So it won't last, no pain in this simulation will last, it is only for a timed period.
Being a timed test is in itself a mercy deserving obedience. Imaging if instead, humans lived for Millions of years, with chronic diseases.

He does the same thing that we see the sun doing to creatures standing too long under it and mock its might, you either adapt and admit its might, fear the burn or get a sunstroke and die.
