I'm reminded of the (possibly apocryphal) exchange between Bishop Wilberforce and Thomas Huxley at the Oxford debate. The story goes, more or less, that Wilberforce asked Huxley if it was through his grandfather or his grandmother that he claimed descent from an ape. Huxley is said to have retorted that he would not be ashamed to have a monkey for an ancestor but would be ashamed to be connected to a man who would use his great gifts to obscure the truth. Basically, he preferred being related to a baboon than to a bishop.
