Every time I rented a VHS from Blockbuster the damn thing told me I was going to Leavenworth for life plus 50 years if the FBI caught me copying Bambi and shit.
That's theft, not borrowing a melody for a song. Ask Joe Satriani or Jimmy Page. Pirating is not the same as infringement. You may record a copy of a movie, album, or book for your own use. You may not do so for resale.
It's really not that hard. When a song from Coldplay or Led Zeppelin is found to have been rewritten and used to sell albums, it isn't criminal. They didn't go to jail, now did they? When you tape "Star Wars" from a rental tape and then turn around and start selling copies, that's where the FBI warning comes in.
I'm probably rare here in that I do actually own copyrights. I've done a little reading about this.
