it probably has not, early life is almost exclusively anaerobic.  Incipient oxidation of the earth’s atmophere around 2.2 billion years ago probably lead to repeated oxygen holocaust events where oxygen levels oscillated and with each upswing large percentage of microbial life is killed off.

What about the >trillions of creatures who live off oxygen since?
