california river is an ancient river which is believed to have existed from around the last days of the dinosaurs to around 40 million years ago. it flowed roughly in the reverse direction compared to modern Colorado river, originating in southern california and draining north east into Utah. it is believed to have carved out significant portions of the grand canyon long before modern colorado river took advantage of the existing ancient canyon, and further deepened and widened it into the modern Grand Canyon.
