In my Junior High days (a year or so before 1998). I learned (or I remember to have learned) that this term designated Nazi atrocities against Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, regime opponents etc. Soviet Gulag’s were not included in this definition (or that’s how I remember it).

Whoever taught you that, was wrong. I can not believe that this level of nonsense is taught in any school, in any country.
