It’s not a safety issue, it’s a gun violence issue. As regards gun violence, the US, literally awash with guns, ranks 131st (out of 197) in terms of personal safety. You could try looking things up instead of guessing.
I grew up in a place that was mind-numbingly unsafe. The idea of getting a gun never crossed my mind.

Why focus only on gun violence? What makes you think that some murderers don't respond to gun control by using other weapons?
