The catholic churches main funding for what they call charitable work is your tax money, not little old catholic ladies. Successful pantries and kitchens are operated to be beneficial - usually for tax purposes- to the same businesses that refuse to pay people enough money not to need pantries and soup kitchens. Food aid is distributed by the same entities actively starving the people they're (failing to) feed....and none of it, absolutely none of it, alleviates poverty in any way...which is sad, but true.
Sometimes I think that we've allowed the construction of a world so ridiculous that when every solution to it's problems sounds equally ridiculous we imagine that poverty and hunger are the fabric of the universe and those solutions seeming ridiculous are an indication that they are wrong. It doesn't often occur to us that in an impossible situation all possible solutions might seem equally ludicrous. So I might say, for example, lets eat the rich. Sounds ridiculous - but the sudden death of the worlds richest people would, by default, disburse their accrued assets. Impossible situation, ludicrous solution - but not because it wouldn't work. Because we've allowed this fucked up state of affairs to begin with.
Christian charities are not a force for good. They may be the best we have in a fucked up world (untrue, but hey, why not allow the possibility) - but we're not talking about good here. We're not even in the wheelhouse of good. Christian charities are a force for christendom.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
