Whether this relationship is causal is hard to determine. But, just like mentally healthy people, mentally ill people are way more likely to be victims of violence than to be violent themselves. And it hardly makes sense to disarm them. The link between mental illness and violence is without a doubt massively overblown in the minds of the public.
Again with the idiocy. There are, in fact, some mental illnesses that make people more, not less, prone to violent behaviour - ASPD, PTSD, substance dependencies, etc. If a person has one of the psychoses which do have a valid link to violent actions, arming them is effectually turning an assault into a murder.
Are ALL people with mental or personality disorders likely to be violent? Of course not, and no one is claiming that. But you can't simply claim that people with mental illnesses need to be armed and expect to be taken seriously. Which mental illnesses?

You want to disarm people with PTSD? You want to disarm the combatants that fought for Croatia that we have now?
