I'm about as hardcore a Tolkien fan as exists, and despite a few instances of poetic (and that term applies on more than one level) license, I think the trilogy was brilliantly done. Target fixation on one minor detail in a movie is a surefire recipe for not-having-fun. I don't bother comparing books to movies very often. I consider them two separate works. In LOTR's case, however, the two are closer than I would ever have imagined possible.
While we're speaking of details, the scene in Rivendell between Aragorn and Arwen made me cry last time I watched it, and that is a part I remember being better rendered than the books did it.
