Definitely broke the mood hard, and fast. I remember that scene more than any other part of the movies......The Hobbit is one of the first books I can remember reading. I'd rather it stayed a book than become a garbage movie. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I suspect that Legolas' shield surfing, as well as a number of other character "modifications" were done to appeal to certain market demographics.

I expected that the movies would depart from the books - and despite those departures, I thought they were good films in their own right.

I didn't care for using Gimli as comic relief (one dwarf tossing joke is one too many) - not to mention Merry and Pippen. Nor for the portrayal of Aragorn as an angsty exile who didn't want to reclaim the throne. Faramir and Denethor fared no better - I would have preferred those two characters to have been developed more in the movie.

Speaking of Faramir, I thought the biggest plot deviation blunder was Farmir taking Samwise, Frodo and the Ring to Osgiliath. Although Faramir did redeem himself for this act, Tolkein's Faramir did not and would not have done it in the first place. It did his character a great disservice, and left me thinking "WTF is this shit?!?" in the theater. Meh, I guess by doing that, you can do the whole "Frodo almost gives the ring to a Nazgul" bit, which was also crap.

I was also disappointed that the Scouring of the Shire was left out, though it would have made for an anti-climactic ending more so than it already had.

For all their faults, I still enjoy all three films - but they will never compare to the books.

I have higher expectations of the "The Hobbit" films - I think the story is more adaptable to screen in many ways.

Please Mr. Jackson - no dwarf jokes in this one, please.

Tolkein's elves don't shield surf.

Seriously. Turn in your LotR geek card.
