When vitamin C was first isolated, the chemist responsible saw it was an acidic tasting sugar like compound. He didn’t know its molecular structure but did have a sense of humor. So he proposed to call it Ignose. Ign- for ignorant, -ose is common chemistry suffix meaning sugar, as in lactose.
