But the modern scientific method works via p-values. If, under the null hypothesis, the probability of some observation happening by chance is lower than 5%, you reject the null hypothesis.

The trouble with that is that all the p-values that can be mustered don't affect whether a particular event (such as the Croatian War) has occurred. As an example, the probability of being dealt a royal flush as a pat hand is 0.00015, yet it's happened to me twice.
