People are susceptible to singular experiences. They don’t need to be constantly brain dead to be religious. They only need to to be not too bright normally and unduly influenced by a few instances of exceptional delusions or gullibility.
I’m not sure that not eating for a few hours would create those instances. Certainly not enough to damage the brain.
