Prince is an artist I absolutely failed to appreciate during his lifetime.
Case in point:
I recently did a big article on this song for Anglotopia, even included five versions with Eric Clapton doing the solo*], but somehow, this version with Prince doing the solo** blows them all away. If I’m interpreting Dhani’s facial expressions accurately, even he’s blown away, and his Dad wrote the bloody song.
* the original White Album version, the Concert for Bangladesh, Live in Japan, The Concert for George, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee
** Clapton was already booked for the Royal Albert Hall the same night as this concert, FTR, so, unless they un-retired the Concorde just to allow Eric to fly from London to Cleveland, it’d be impossible for him to do both. but at least Prince just so happened to be inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame that very night.
